Akashi Sejuro
Well to understand about the character I’m going to write about, you’ll need to know some more about everything that happened. Akashi Sejuro used to be the former captain of a middle school basketball team. Akashi wasn’t mentally well and had two split personalities which switched at times. His team was not just any regular team, they were known by the label of the Generation of Miracles, and all 5 people in the team were generational prodigies all led by Akashi. Akashi wasn’t just good at basketball, rather he was one of those people who have vowed to be the best at everything. The fact that Akashi was born into a rich family with a strict father makes it evident why he’s the best at everything and cannot afford losing, he thinks he needs to protect their legacy. Akashi used to be a normal player until something one of the players in their team, Aomine did. Aomine stopped attending practice as he thought of himself to be too good, it was rightfully so. Like I said, they’re prodigies and Aomine thought getting any better was of no use as they won without the littlest of effort. Akashi was against this as he believed in keeping getting better. Despite being the captain, Akashi was the least talented player in the team as he wasn’t physically gifted at all, he was the shortest of them all. And as much as people want to deny it, height plays a huge role in a sport like basketball and akashi was at a disadvantage. After the stunt pulled by Aomine, another player, Atsushi, wanted to quit practising. But this time Akashi denied it and that led to a one-on-one battle between Akashi and Atsushi. Akashi almost lost, but right before the final point he realised he couldn’t afford to lose and losing was disgraceful. This awakened his second personality which solely wanted to win regardless of the circumstances and he won against Atsushi due to his newly awakened personality. The old Akashi thought that winning was important but he believed friendship was more important, but the new Akashi only valued victory over everything, the new Akashi had a god complex which made him believe winning was everything and friendship was temporary. The signature quote of this character is “I am absolute”, he believes that he is the best and there is nobody above him. This might sound incredibly selfish but it is also justified considering his past and the fact that his mother passed away with basketball being her most significant gift to her son and his strict father who didn’t believe that Akashi should lose, ever. Well to be completely fair to him, Akashi has never lost at anything, in his entire life. Not once.
After this event, Akashi started treating everybody as inferiors and developed what I’d call a sociopathic personality. I’m not saying this was right for him to do, but he is surely misunderstood for being selfish as all he ever wanted was to not lose respect in his family’s eyes and protect what his mother gave him. He might as well be one of the most misunderstood characters ever written.
Like I said before he wasn’t the most physically gifted prodigy and his main playing style revolves around his mental capabilities. His character sure does grow to not value victory over everything else. But this event made so many people dislike the character, when he was just misunderstood.
